Talk Like a Pirate Day

Ahoy, me Hearties!  Tis Sweatin' Sandy Barbossa here (aka Mrs. Seuss on a non-pirate day).  Tis one of me favorite times of da year!  Tis "Talk Like a Pirate Day" on September 19!  These ole scallywags used to rule the 7 seas and now many rest at the bottom of the ocean in Davy Jones' locker.  Did ya know that der was a famous woman pirate that go by the name of Mary Read?  She wanted ta be a pirate so bad she dressed in men's clothing.

What does a pirate want the most?  Treasure!!  But once treasure was found, you'd have to bury it so no one stole it!  They mainly buried booty on remote islands in the Caribbean because der was no people living on em and day was far from da shipping routes.

The library has a treasure of information about pirates. Well blimey!  A great one is called 100 Things You Should Know About Pirates  by Andrew Langley or Everything I Know About Pirates by Tom Lichtenheld.  If ya want to go an' choose your own adventure, try The Golden Age of Pirates:  An Interactive History Adventure by Bob Temple.

So t'wood only be right to leave ya with a few bits of pirate lingo so that if ya run into a pirate on September 19th, ya'll know what he is saying:

Ahoy matey! = Hello, my friend!
Aye! = Yes
Head = toilet
Landlubber = big, slow clumsy person who doesn't know how to sail
Dead men tell no tales = Just get out of dere fast if you hear dat one!

So have fun me hearties and talk like a pirate!  Now I'm gonna weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen!
