The Legends Call Number 001

The month of October lends itself to the tales of mysterious creatures such as witches, vampires and werewolves.  But there are other legends of unexplained creatures featured in the 001 Dewey section.  A famous one located in Scotland is the tale of Nessie.  Who is Nessie, you ask?  Perhaps you are more familiar with the name of the Loch Ness Monster who legend has inhibits the lake called Loch Ness (Loch is the Scottish word for lake).  Sightings of Nessie go as far back as A.D. 565, when the priest Saint Columba was said to have run into one in the River Ness.  Picture a dinosaur type creature with two short, stubby horn crowns on a narrow head, a long neck and a wide round body with flippers and a powerful tail.  In October 1986, ten boats used sonar to try to find Nessie but she would not be found.  The debate as to whether Nessie is real or not continues today.

Native Americans call this creature Sasquatch.  It has been sighted in the forests of northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Canada's British Columbia.  The creature stands at over 8 feet tall, has an ape-like face, long arms and is covered in hair.  Oh and believe it or not, has a big foot print.  Have you thought of the other name associated with this creature?  If you said Bigfoot, you are correct.  The legend of Bigfoot grew popular in the 1950s and 1960s, but sightings still come in periodically.  Most scientist believe that the species is a myth or a hoax, but there are those who think Sasquatch is very real.  What do you think?
Everyone knows the famous movie extraterrestrial, E.T., but stories of aliens and space crafts visiting
Earth have been around for centuries. Area 51 Air Force Base located in Nevada has been the focus of various movies and many books. In 1947, the military responded to a UFO sighting in Roswell, New Mexico.  They claimed to have only found a weather balloon, but many people think they found aliens and their spacecraft because after that crash, Area 51 became a top secret base.  Hmm, interesting!

So the next time you're at the library, take a look the Call Number 001 section.  You will see a lot of unexplained mysteries that might need exploring!
