For the Love of Picture Books!

I LOVE picture books! Some are super-duper easy, some have no
words, others have breath-taking illustrations; they can tell about history or just plan make you laugh hysterically while everyone room looks at you and what you are reading.  November is Picture Book Month (I cannot believe it is already November!!)  The wonderful thing about picture books is that you can find one on just about any topic you want.  Did you know that picture books can also be found in the Non-fiction section too?  Yep, all the fairy tales, folktales and  informational picture books about animals are all found in the non-fiction section. Did you know they even use picture books in high school?  Yes, it is very true.

Here are some of my personal favorites and reasons why pictures books are so important.

1.  Even if children can't read yet, picture books introduce them to the concept of reading.
It's okay if a child just picks up a book to look at pictures.  That's the beginning stages of reading.  If they make up their own stories to go along with the pictures, that's a sign of early literacy too.

2.  Picture books encourage conversation.
Readers talk about what's happening in the story, what emotions are the characters going through, the meaning of words, and can the reader relate to the story.

3.  Visual literacy skills are strengthened and introduce children to the LOVE of art.
You've heard the phrase, "a picture is worth a thousand words."  Pictures tell the story and clue us in on things the author may have intentionally left out in the words.  Characters' emotions are seen through pictures.

4.   Children learn how to become better listeners through picture books.
Ever had a day where the kids are running around acting crazy (I see a few of you nodding).  Well, I've also seen the power of reading aloud to children who were acting like that and been awed by the magic of picture books as the children are drawn to the story and sit quietly snuggled up next to me and then beg for another book.  Yep, that is definitely magical.

Roselle Public Library definitely has a plethora of picture books for you to come and check out.  So please come and celebrate Picture Book Month with us.  We'll be happy to help you find some great pictures books that will make you rhyme, count, happy, sad, cry, say "Wow!," see things from another perspective and of course make you laugh!
