Go on Vacation Without Leaving Chicago!
It’s easy with a Museum Adventure Pass! Just present your library card and ask to check one out from Youth Services. Passes are good for one week and are available year-round on a first come, first serve basis.
Brookfield Zoo: It may seem crazy to visit the zoo in the winter, but this is the best time to go! Chilly temperatures mean smaller crowds, and you can encourage your kids to check out some of the indoor exhibits. How about a trip to North Africa? In the Fragile Desert house there are meerkats, bat-eared foxes, and a black footed cat. Feeling like a walk in the woods? Try Habitat Africa: The Forest to see an okapi or tiny deer. You could head to South America via the Living Coast and take a gander at penguins and sharks.
Elgin Public Museum: A small natural history museum with a hands-on area for the kids. Take a look at fossils, rocks and minerals, and learn about the LaSalle Expedition.
Lake County Museum: With a prairie themed play area and the mall of history, it’s the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon.
Oriental Institute Museum: If you are a fan of ancient Egypt this is the place for you! With artifacts from Egypt and other cradle of civilization cultures, a walk through these galleries is a trip back in time. The museum also offers events for kids and families like Junior Archeologist and Secrets of the Mummies.
Wherever you decide to go, don't forget to check out a Museum Pass from Youth Services!
